Heartfelt Conversations: Chatsworth Walk Connects Nursing Students and Carers

Led by Derbyshire Voluntary Action’s Community Chesterfield project the Chatsworth Walk took participants on a picturesque journey from Baslow to Chatsworth House in the Peak District, providing not just breathtaking scenery but also a platform for important conversations about the experiences of unpaid carers and their role in healthcare. This partnership event with the University of Derby, and Derbyshire Carers Association on 27 September brought together future healthcare professionals and carers for a day of connection, mindfulness, and dialogue.

“It was wonderful to see students engaging with the carers in an organic and informal environment. They were able to develop an understanding of the struggles and barriers that carers face on a daily basis, which will enable them to positively influence these experiences in practice.” – Faith Vargas, Programme Leader for Student Experience (BSc Adult Nursing) at the University of Derby

Walking Towards Empathy and Understanding

The Chatsworth Walk wasn't just a leisurely stroll through the stunning Peak District; it was a powerful symbol of the journey that unpaid carers embark on every day. Participants, including members and staff of the Derbyshire Carers Association, student nurses, and staff from the University of Derby, embarked on this walk with a shared commitment to understanding the challenges faced by unpaid carers and learning how these experiences influence the healthcare field and studies.

“It was great to get out into the fresh air to talk to carers about their experiences. It’s helped me with my thoughts about interacting with carers as a nurse in the future.” – Adele, Student Nurse at the University of Derby

Mindfulness in Nature

The walk also included a mindfulness event, allowing participants to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature and engage in the present moment. This mindful pause provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of self-care and mental well-being, which is a crucial aspect of caregiving and healthcare professions.

Heartfelt Conversations on Carer Experiences

One of the most touching aspects of the event was the opportunity for student nurses and those with experience as unpaid carers to engage in open, candid conversations. The exchange of personal stories and challenges shed light on the vital role of unpaid carers and how their experiences impact healthcare. It was a chance for student nurses to gain deeper insights into the lives of carers and apply this understanding to their future healthcare careers.

“It’s really important for students to see things from a carer’s point of view, and will hopefully give students a better view of situations in the future when dealing with carers and their loved ones. I think we’ve all learned lots as well as an opportunity for some of our carers to get to know each other too.” Karl S - Project Worker at Derbyshire Carers Association

Generosity of the Chatsworth Estate

The Chatsworth Walk was made possible through the generous support of the Chatsworth Estate. Participants were warmly welcomed at Chatsworth House, where they enjoyed lunch together. The Chatsworth Estate's contribution not only enhanced the event but also exemplified the spirit of community cooperation.

A Community United in Understanding

The Chatsworth Walk underscored the power of community, empathy, and the willingness to engage in conversations that matter. By bringing together unpaid carers, staff, and students, this event highlighted the importance of understanding the experiences of carers, ultimately leading to more compassionate, communicative, and effective healthcare.

"It was a lovely day with some brilliant conversations. It was wonderful to hear some of the shared stories and to see people learning.” – Jennifer Raschbauer, Community Chesterfield Project Director

Community Chesterfield, the Derbyshire Carers Association, and the University of Derby express their thanks to all participants, including the Chatsworth Estate, for their enthusiastic support and contributions to this event.
